Completed Projects - Harmonising Toxicity Data Protocols

Workshop on “Harmonising Toxicity Data Protocols with OECD & Global Guidelines”

Food Security and Food Safety are the prime concerns for the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation (DAC) along with the ICAR, SAUs, Ministry of Health, DGHS, FSSA, ICMR, NIN and other stakeholders within the Government of India and the pesticides industry. Consumers are more concerned about the food they eat and hence it is the duty of the various stakeholders to ensure that the food produced is safe.

Department of Plant Protection Quarantine & Storage (DPPQ&S) is involved in evaluating and registering safe and effective crop protection products (Pesticides; CPP) and technologies to improve productivity and the economic well being of Indian farmers. DPPQ&S evaluates each and every CPP for its safety to users while evaluating the toxicity data submitted by the applicants, covering chronic toxicity, sub acute and long term toxicity data obtained from the innovators of the new molecules. The Indian guidelines also prescribe generation of environmental toxicity studies along with exposure studies to applicators and animals. The Indian protocols for toxicity data generation were framed by the “Gaitonde Committee” way back in 1970s.

The one day scientific workshop on “Harmonizing Toxicity Data Protocols with OECD & Global Guidelines” was organized by Crop Life India; and sponsored by DAC, Ministry of Agriculture on the 4th May, 2011 at Gulmohar Hall, Habitat World at India Habitat Center, Lodhi Colony, New Delhi.
